Chartered in 1856 due to its proximity to the Big Sioux River, Sioux Falls remains a metropolis in an otherwise sparsely populated state. In fact, 300,000 residents living and working in Sioux Falls make up nearly 30 percent of the entire state’s population.

This significant portion of South Dakota’s population was enough to help the Republicans swing this state in favor of their candidate, Donald Trump in the 2020 election. Small town values and adherence to conservative traditions are a trademark of this part of the state and the country.
