These Are The Most Conservative And Most Liberal Towns In America, Per 2024 U.S. Census Data

Photo: wikimedia.org

In today’s day and age, to say that we’re living in a politically charged climate would be an understatement. Our news, neighborhood banter, and dinner-table conversations have brought people’s political ideologies and beliefs to the center of many conversations.

The 2020 election was without a doubt one of the most historic and emotional votes in our country’s history, and only further highlighted the growing disparity between the vantage points of conservatives and liberals, and the direction that each side believes the country should be taking.

Even prior to the election, however, we’d begun to see a substantial re-organization of our country’s population. Many people chose to move away from larger cities, in favor of more removed, rural living experiences. Others took advantage of the reduced cost of living in the cities that people are exiling from, and moved into the center of all the action. And in many ways, the political leanings of a town played a role in helping people to decide where to move.

If you’re considering picking up and moving, it makes sense that you might want to know the ideologies of your potential future neighbors. With the luxury of now being able to reflect on the voting results of the 2020 election, combined with historical US census data, these are the political leanings of various move-worthy towns and cities across America. And just a heads up: some of these will catch you off-guard…

Conservative: Mesa, Arizona

Photo: commons.wikimedia.org/Tony the Marine

Mesa is located about 20 miles east of Phoenix in the Phoenix metro area. It’s bordered by Tempe, Apache Junction, and Gilbert, making this one of the largest metropolitan areas in Arizona. According to a 2023 census statistic, Mesa is one of the largest suburban cities in the United States, with almost 520,000 citizens living and working in the area.

With a neck and neck race going for the title of U.S. CEO, one hundred percent of precincts reported only a .3 percent lead by the Democratic party this time around. Perhaps it’s time for a rematch.

Liberal: Virginia Beach, Virginia

Photo: flickr.com/Ken Lund

Virginia Beach is the largest city in Virginia, and home to resorts, beaches, and an enviable oceanfront that draws thousands of people each year. The residents who live and work in this progressive city favor sand, surf, sun, and Democratic policy. Nearly 500,000 live and work in this southern oasis, participating in industries like real estate, defense, and tourism that puts the city on the map.

Although Virginia was a close one, Virginia Beach residents participated in a valiant effort to move their city closer to Democratic influence. 44 percent of the vote was not enough to turn this state blue in the 2020 election, yet Virginia Beach residents may continue employing future efforts to swing the state.

Conservative: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Photo: flickr.com/Nicolas Henderson

Oklahoma City is the capital of Oklahoma, with a ranking of the 25th largest city in the United States. The oil, natural gas, and livestock industries are its claims to fame and the reason for explosive growth shortly after its inception, and it continues to thrive as a southern city with a high standard of living, lovely nightlife, and amazing cultural opportunities.

Republican leanings are strong in this area of the country, with over 66 percent of registered voters choosing to vote Republican this past November. With a preference this strong, it’s unlikely that the city’s residents will deviate from this in subsequent elections.

Liberal: Chicago, Illinois

Photo: flickr.com/Ken Lund

Chicago Illinois, or the Windy City, as some refer to it, is home to nearly 3 million residents, according to recent census reports. Situated along the banks of Lake Michigan, it’s the largest city in the Midwest and a major economic and industrial hub for the entire area. Loyal residents attest to plenty of career opportunity, sizzling nightlife, and an abundance of art, music and culture to keep the most discriminating individual satisfied.

With so much of Illinois claiming Chicago’s greater metropolitan area as their home, it’s easy to see how this state was swung in our recent election. Conservative may have been more prevalent in outlying areas of the state, but thanks to the densely populated areas of Illinois including Chicago, the Democrats took the state with little effort.

Conservative: Colorado Springs, Colorado

Photo: flickr.com/trialsanderrors

Colorado Springs is the second most densely populated area in Colorado, running behind Denver. This beautiful, scenic town sits at the base of Pikes Peak, which sits on the Eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains. Everything from economic opportunities to schools to beautiful scenery and hopping nightlife have placed this city on the list of 100 best places to live in the United States.

Another close race, this conservative town leaned toward the blue this time, with 55 percent of the votes going to the Democratic party. Better luck next time, Colorado Springs. Perhaps next election you’ll have the opportunity to represent the majority.

The smaller sister of the Twin Cities, St. Paul is the capital of Minnesota and home to many devoted Democratic policies and programs that color the city’s climate. Scenic beauty, solid midwestern values, and strong community relationships inspire residents and visitors alike to spend as much time here as possible.

St. Paul followed the lead of sister city Minneapolis when it came to political persuasion. The Twin Cities both voted Democrat in this last election, and strong opinions and stronger coffee no doubt fueled a loyal showing at the polls on November 3rd.

Conservative: Jacksonville, Florida

Photo: flickr.com/Dave Fletcher

Jacksonville has gained much area and growth through consolidation; several large towns have combined to become the city that we know to be Jacksonville’s metropolitan area today. Settled on the banks of the St. John river, it’s become a major port for trade and military activity in the deep South, and it has become a booming economic area with opportunity for industry to grow.

Conservative they were, and conservative they stand–the citizens of Jacksonville pulled ahead with 57 percent of the vote in this last election. It’ll be interesting to see how their population continues to evolve as our society weathers the changes that will inevitably come from this politically charged time.

Liberal: Austin, Texas

Austin is the capital city of Texas, as well as the county seat of Travis county. This booming city has experienced an 80 percent surge in growth since the year 2000, and with more residents joining the political climate and values that the city embodies, it’s easy to see that they are a formidable presence in any movement.

Here we are again; in a state that usually screams conservatism, Austin residents remained loyal to their core values, and they showed up big for Biden and his team this past November. How will Austin’s political climate affect outer Texas in subsequent elections? Stay tuned for more news from our friends to the south.

Fortune 500 companies and major educational institutions make their home in this city along the river, and with it they bring plenty of opportunity, diversity, and culture that residents celebrate.

Amidst the red of the rest of the state, St. Louis residents pushed back with their loyal support of the Democratic vote. Industry and innovation help inspire progressive views, and the residents of St. Louis showed up and represented well on election day.

Conservative: Anaheim, California

Photo: flickr.com/Loren Javier

This fringe city has a claim on several Disney resorts and hotels; a number of industry and business opportunities, as well as some beautiful scenery make Anaheim a very attractive place for up and coming families.

Anaheim turned tables this past November and came in with 53 percent of their votes for the Democrats, which is a surprising statistic when given their conservative makeup and past voting history. It’ll be interesting to see where this population goes with their political loyalties in the years to come.

Liberal: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philly has been the financial, industrial, and cultural hub of the Delaware valley since the 1800s.  A population of nearly 7 million people celebrate the “city of brotherly love” by continuing to foster traditions of history, culture, and community that Philadelphia is known for.

In keeping with many other urban areas on this list, Philadelphia helped flip the state of Pennsylvania toward the Democratic vote, and this is good news for city residents that showed up in a display of patriotic unity on election day.

Conservative: Omaha, Nebraska

Photo: flickr.com/Raymond Bucko, SJ

The seat of Douglas County, Omaha is the largest city in Nebraska, with almost one million residents living in the metropolitan area. A wonderful place to work and live, it’s home to four Fortune 500 companies, including Berkshire Hathaway and Mutual of Omaha.

Liberal: New Orleans, Louisiana

Photo: flickr.com/Irma Ramos

New Orleans is one of the southernmost ports along the Gulf of Mexico and is a major hub of activity into Latin America. Rich history, culture, and architecture make New Orleans a unique destination for traveling or settling down.

This progressive population no doubt significantly impacted California’s electoral vote as a whole, and with such a large influence over the state, it is likely that California will be favoring the blue for quite some time.

Conservative: Aurora, Colorado

Photo: flickr.com/Ken Lund

What started as a blossoming frontier town of farmers and ranchers has grown into Colorado’s third largest city, with almost 400,000 residents who enjoy its beautiful views, clean air, and plenty of economic opportunity.

While this last vote was a close one, the Democrats took the lead with 55 percent of the vote in Aurora; a number of other votes spread over minor candidates made this a close one in terms of popular vote.

Liberal: Baltimore, Maryland

Photo: flickr.com/Robert Williams

British colonists established the port of Baltimore to push out the incredible tobacco crops they were getting from local soil, and the city has since expanded to encompass a number of business and industry opportunities that keep Baltimore in a state of continual growth.

Conservative: Lafayette, Louisiana

Photo: commons.wikimedia.org/Infrogmation

Lafayette is a sleepy little metropolis along the banks of the Vermillion river in Louisiana. A population of almost 500,000 people lean conservative in most elections, and this hub city boasts a low crime rate and a booming economy, which make it a very desirable place to live.

Thriving culture and industry as well as strong educational institutions make this one of the premiere places to live in the United States.

Buffalo leans blue this time, with 52 percent of the vote going to Biden and other Democratic locals. This treasured town will continue to thrive in the midst of coming political changes, and will no doubt be a significant player in the elections to come.

With unique boastings such as the largest rose garden in the country and an impressive 20,000 post-secondary students soaking up the delightful atmosphere, Tyler continues to thrive and expand even today.

Trump took home the win for this Smith county seat with 52 percent of the vote in 2020, which may not seem like a major win, but it’s electoral votes that matter. Texas was a huge win for him, and it is a strong representation of the strength of the conservative vote and the historic direction that Texans take for political influence.

Liberal: New York, New York

Photo: flickr.com/Andrés Nieto Porras

The city of Detroit is home to 4.3 million people, making it the second largest city in the Midwest behind Chicago. A number of industries and manufacturing enterprises keep Detroit residents afloat, and recent renovations of the educational system and infrastructure are attracting more and more residents each year.
