Before Heather Nauert became a journalist, she served as a government official. She also succeeded John Kirby as the spokesperson for the US Department of State from 2017 to 2019, at which time she was succeeded by Morgan Ortagus. She is also a member of the Hudson Institute, as well as the J. William Fulbright Scholarship Board.

She joined Fox early in its existence, back in 1998, where the Illinois native worked as the Undersecretary of State of Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs from March 2018 to October 2018. She currently works for Fox as a special reporter but has also appeared on ABC from time to time.
