The Craziest Things That People Have Seen Happen At A Wedding

Photo: BoredPanda.com

Weddings are designed to be a celebration between two people, along with family, friends, and loved ones. But that doesn’t mean that they always go off without a hitch- couples often share “incidents” after the fact that could have led to their big day going off the rails.

There are a plethora of crazy wedding stories out there, buried in the minds of some of the most unfortunate wedding attendees, but there are a few that stand head and shoulders above the rest. From unwanted guests, to awkward speeches, and even parent of the bride beatdowns- some people have seen it all. Hopefully, none of these misadventures have happened to you. But if they have, well… at least you have an interesting story to tell? These people definitely do…

Things I Didn’t Agree With

Photo: Shutterstock.com

I was a wedding DJ for 7 years, and I’d played at hundreds of weddings, so I’ve seen a lot of things. One of the worst I’ve witnessed was the best man’s speech. After I hand over the mic, he says, “Well, there were a lot of things that I didn’t agree with in this relationship when it first started….”

He continued by saying, “There are things that I still don’t agree with because it’s seriously messed up and unbalanced, and the dynamic is too one-sided.” He said all this while he was making eye-contact with the bride. “But… that’s not why we’re here today.

We’re here to celebrate the marriage between Jack and Ingrid, so I just want to say congratulations, best of luck to you guys.” Everyone in the place was just looking around, glancing nervously at one another. Even the bride and groom didn’t say a word. Reddit User: ArocketKnight

Drunker by the Minute

Photo: Shutterstock.com

My brother got married while enlisted in the Navy, so he came home and had his wedding between two 6-month deployments. He decided to invite his father; he had been adopted by our mother’s ex-husband when they got married, so he thought that it was right to invite him. The reception was held in the basement of the church where the ceremony took place, so it was a dry wedding.

His dad showed up and proceeded to go back and forth between his car and the reception, and every time he showed up drunker than before. The breaking point was when he got into a fistfight with my father after he called my new sister-in-law a tramp. While fighting, they toppled into the wedding cake. Reddit User: ladycowbell

Fortunate Ring Bearer

Photo: Shutterstock.com

My husband’s brother was having a seaside wedding. Our almost 2-year-old son was the ring bearer for them. He passed off the rings to the best man, and we were all very proud that he did his job well. But then after that, he toddled away…off the cliff.

It was at least a 60-to-80-foot drop to the beach below. By some miracle, he got caught up in the bushes, and my husband was able to snatch him up. He was buckled into his stroller for the rest of the night after that, kamikaze kid. Reddit user: [redacted]

The Masterpiece

Photo: Shutterstock.com

I went to this wedding where the groom was a pastry chef by trade. As you can imagine, he went all out on his own wedding cake; it was a masterpiece. It was astoundingly beautiful, intricate, and unlike anything I’ve ever seen. About half of the couple’s friends are also pastry chefs, all of whom were dying to see this piece of culinary art….

The caterer’s assistant dropped the cake in the kitchen before it ever saw the light of day. Very few people saw it in its full glory, and I was watching when it fell. The assistant had the audacity to say, “Well, we’ll just serve the sheet cake.” There was no sheet cake. Reddit User: Scienceatemykid

Bitter Sister

Photo: Shutterstock.com

I worked for a great small family business and was invited to the wedding of my employer’s sister. My boss had three siblings: one brother and two sisters. The younger sister, who was without a doubt the spoiled baby of the family, was the sibling who was getting married.

At the wedding, my boss and his brother stood up and told the funny and heartwarming story of how their baby sister and the groom met during baby sister’s birthday party in Las Vegas. Then the older sister stood up and put the not-so-funny angle on the story….

The couple only met because the birthday girl was told by her family to go out and find some sucker to buy her birthday drinks because the family didn’t want to pay for her anymore. The older sister then went on to tell more not-so-funny stories. I felt very awkward having to witness it, and it seemed to me to showcase how much the older sister was jealous of her younger sister. My Friend, the MC

Photo: Shutterstock.com

At my Australian wedding, we were getting to the speeches part of the night, but people were waiting for me to come back from the toilets. The meal had not quite agreed with me, and I was dealing with the consequences. My friend, who was the MC, was currently stalling the 110+ people and decided that it would be funny to find me, with the mic in hand….

He entered the toilets and asked me how much longer I’d be. I didn’t know he had a mic and that everyone was waiting for me, so replied quickly back with an angry “BACK OFF IDIOT, I’M DOING A NUMBER 2. I’LL BE DONE WHEN I AM FREAKING DONE” (edited version, of course), much to the horror of the people in the next room. Reddit user: [redacted]

The Real Bride

Photo: Creative Commons/Lawrence OP

Just before my sister’s wedding ceremony began, as everyone was getting in place and last-minute things were being done in this big old Catholic church, my father noticed a strange woman. She was at the back of the church and had a confused look on her face. He approached her, asking if she needed anything….

She told him that she was the bride, then opened a beat-up suitcase she had that contained clothing resembling a wedding dress. My father, suspecting she had some mental health issues, played along, suggesting that she may be in the wrong church. When that didn’t work, he slipped off and called the police….

In the meantime, the lady walked up to my soon to be brother-in-law, standing at the altar, and said, “You’re not going to leave me this time.” When the police arrived, the lady spotted them and made a quick exit. It turns out she had a habit of pulling the stunt. My brother-in-law still reminds my sister that he had a choice on their wedding day, but still chose her. Reddit User: longsteved

The Ranger’s Station

Photo: Creative Commons/Scene Photos Photography

I attended a wedding where just as the bride started walking down the aisle, her grandmother had a sudden cardiac event. We had to stop the procession and start CPR in the aisle way. To make matters worse, we were in a large park, and the people calling 911 couldn’t give the exact address….

I ran to the ranger’s station, but it was locked. I broke a window screen and crawled through to use the landline so EMS could trace and respond. She didn’t make it. Because of the situation, I later found out that the ranger had placed a hidden camera in the women’s restroom where the girls got ready/dressed for the wedding. He served jail time. The Floodlights

Photo: Creative Commons/Misha Ali

I went to a wedding in a huge manor on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The house was lit up by big floodlights in the floor pointing up at the house. When it got dark, some guests ran inside to the bar/dance floor area and shouted at people to come outside and look….

A man and a woman who met for the first time at the wedding were doing the deed below one of the floodlights. They did not realize that their gyrations were being projected 50 feet high onto the side of the house! They were very embarrassed when they found out. Reddit User: taucher1979

The Familiar Priest

Photo: Creative Commons/ashengrove

I was the best man at my brother’s wedding. During the service, I realized that I knew the priest officiating the service from somewhere; we’d been intimate a few months before the event. It was instantly awkward when both of us realized where we knew each other from. I started giggling hysterically at the absurdity of it all while desperately trying not to….

I thought the service was never going to end. After, everyone wanted to know why I was laughing so hard. Even though my whole family knew and accepted I was gay, I just couldn’t bring myself to out the priest; not that he didn’t deserve it, as he’d lied to me about what he did for a living. The Sharp Heels

Photo: Creative Commons/JohnSeb

The wedding I attended went off without a hitch. However, something happened at the reception that was very unfortunate. Everyone was dancing and having a great time, with different levels of drunk throughout the crowd. One of the girls was wearing particularly sharp high heels, and one of the older women attending had particularly old/soft skin on her feet….

The girl stepped/danced right on this poor old lady’s foot, and it was instantly bleeding profusely. It began to pool on the dance floor, and the music didn’t even stop. She was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a local hospital. She was fine, but the girl felt super guilty. Reddit user: [redacted]

No Attention from the Groom

Photo: Creative Commons/matchfitskills

I’m a caterer, and during the cocktail hour before the reception dinner at a wedding, this one couple at a table kept taking two champagnes every time I came around to them. They probably shouldn’t have, but hey, I understand needing to be intoxicated at a wedding to tolerate it….

Later on, around the time of dinner, the wedding coordinator finds me, grabs me by the arm, and says it’s an “emergency.” The lady was sitting in a stupor against a wall outside the dining room, crying and throwing glasses. She talked about how she slept with the groom once, and now he’s paid no attention to her. Reddit User: ccsunflor

Diaper Change on Table 5

Photo: Creative Commons/doke01

I once worked at a wedding where one of the guests thought it would be perfectly reasonable to change her baby’s diaper on a table where the other guests were eating their dinner. I offered to show her where the restrooms were, as they had a baby changing station….

I also offered to take her to an empty banquet room, but she said she was finished and had the audacity to shove the dirty diaper at me and tell me to throw it away for her. The other guests looked both disgusted and mortified. Reddit User: berdahl88

The Party Goes On

Photo: Creative Commons/osseous

I once attended a wedding with my parents, who saw when it happened. My parents saw this, not me. People were dancing on the dance floor when this very large man just fell over. Apparently he had suffered a massive heart attack while dancing up a storm. Unfortunately, he passed away right there….

His poor wife was crying and screaming over his body. Paramedics were called, and when they arrived, they put up this portable curtain around the body while they worked on him, bagged him up, and took him away. The sad part is that they tried to keep the party going….

The band was like, “Okay everyone, now let’s get back to dancing!” Obviously, nobody went back to dancing. The bride was also in hysterics because she will now always be the person whose wedding was where someone ended up dying. Reddit User: stooltoad9

I was an attendant at my best friend’s wedding. Her father was walking her down the aisle, and while he was not visibly drunk, he was definitely having a hard time walking behind her and had to sit in the pew to rest. While doing so, he stepped on her dress.

You could guess what happened next….He ended up ripping her dress from her back all the way down, leaving very little to the imagination. They actually had to stop the wedding so that she could find safety pins to try and fix it. Reddit User: 3Suze

The Sister of the Bride

Photo: Creative Commons/mayak2

I was once catering for this one wedding where the sister of the bride wasn’t invited. She ended up actually crashing the wedding and when she showed up drunk, she got in a big fight with the bride. The two women were fighting until the father of broke it up.

He basically put the sister in a compromising position and ended up dragging her out of the venue…. The bride was surprisingly fine afterward and proceeded like nothing ever happened. Even I was surprised at how well she handled it. Reddit User: paulsmith4908

In Love for Over a Decade

Photo: Creative Commons/robleto

At the wedding of my husband’s college friend, we learned that the bride, who was his friend, had been in love with him for over a decade. We learned this little tidbit from the women at our table at the reception after we introduced ourselves while waiting for them to arrive….

The people at our table were both extremely worried and more than a little anxious that we came to the wedding. When the newlyweds arrived, the bride made a bee-line for our table. She ignored her family and left her husband standing alone. She clung to my husband and began to sob….

She had to be pulled off of him, and then after ‘fixing’ herself, we tried to leave quietly, but she followed us. Her parting words were “well I guess I know what I was missing all along” while staring at my chest. So awkward. Reddit User: streamstroller

“I Just Wanted You Guys to Know…”

Photo: Creative Commons/ewen and donabel

I’ve only been to one wedding in my life, and it was my father’s cousin’s wedding. My dad’s uncle, the groom’s father, made a toast when the groom and bride were standing at the altar. I wasn’t sure if it was normal, as it was my first wedding, but everyone around me seemed confused….

He then says, “I’m glad I made it out here today. I just want you guys to know that I have cancer and I’m going to die soon.” In the same breath, he said, “Congrats to my son and his beautiful bride. Enjoy your time!” The whole room was in complete silence. It was the most awkward and saddest thing I’ve possibly ever witnessed. Reddit user: [redacted]

The Ex-Girlfriend

Photo: Creative Commons/Jacob & Kiki Hantla

I attended this wedding where the ex-girlfriend of the groom showed up at the wedding uninvited and drunk. The groom broke up with her over 10 years earlier, and they had not seen each other in over 8 years. She was very loud, and she was saying some very perverted things about what she wanted to do to the groom.

The bride then steps up, gets in the ex-girlfriend’s face, and the next thing you know, the ex-girlfriend is suddenly out cold on the floor. The bride that we know is normally a calm and peaceful person. A few of us carried the woman out of the reception hall.

We dropped her off at her apartment, which was approximately 20 minutes away…. The bride ended up telling my wife that “there is nothing that will ruin my wedding day.” We were all stunned by what she did, and honestly some of us were kind of proud of her. Reddit User: mrsheikh

The Peanut Butter Cookies

Photo: Creative Commons/waferboard

My mom used to work at a catering company, and it was mandatory that they made announcements about what the ingredients were in the food, specifically if they had nuts in them or things that people would be allergic to. The catering company made the food announcement, and this one guest, a seemingly nice lady, walked right up to the peanut butter cookie station and ate a few….

Right then and there, she went into anaphylactic shock. They immediately called an ambulance, but unfortunately, she passed away while on the way to the hospital. My mom later found out that she knew full well what was in it. Reddit User: Pm_me_usernames

“Go To The Parking Lot”

Photo: Creative Commons/Bridget AMES

During this one wedding reception I was lucky enough to attend, one of the craziest things happened. The bride suddenly received a tip to go outside to the parking lot. When she got there, she ends up finding her new husband making out with his ex-girlfriend.

The ensuing fight came inside the hall, and the party screeched to a halt…. Both families were displeased and stuck him with most of the bills. As expected, the relationship did not last and we (the guests) all kept our gifts. Reddit User: onejoke_username

Favors from Your Second Cousin

Photo: Flickr/Brooke Anderson

I was a bridesmaid in my friend’s wedding. The ceremony was perfect, but when the time came for the newlyweds to have their first dance, the groom was nowhere to be found. The wedding party fanned out to look for him, and it wasn’t long before I found him. I wish I hadn’t….

I caught him getting “favors” from his second cousin. But he had an excuse: he said that he was so drunk that he thought it was his new wife. She was wearing a bright red dress…there was no mistaking her for anyone else. I couldn’t keep this information to myself, so I told the bride. Their marriage didn’t last very long. The Cattails

Photo: Creative Commons/museseeker

My cousin decided to have his wedding at one of our family member’s houses. The place was beautiful, and it backed up onto a large swamp area. It was the middle of summer, so everything was dried out. The ceremony was perfect, but during the reception, I heard someone screaming….

I turned around to see one of my idiot second cousins come running up the path from the swamp area, followed by 10-foot-high flames close behind. We found out that he wanted to see if the cattail plant could catch on fire. It turns out that it could. The bride and groom were told that they would be charged $10,000 if the fire department had to come out again. Reddit User: corinneski

A Badger on Meds

Photo: Creative Commons/museseeker

One of my childhood friends married a biker. They were an amazing couple, and I’m still good friends with them, but their wedding was a complete mess. The wedding took place on her parents’ front lawn. They had to take down the front fence so the bridal party could ride up on their Harley bikes….

Many crazy things happened, but the craziest was when this little French woman got angry with her huge husband at the reception. She took off her stiletto heel and embedded it in his forehead. It took 5 biker guys to contain this 90-pound woman; she was like a badger on meds. He went to the hospital, she went to jail, and we kept drinking. Reddit User: Pyre-it

The Groom’s Brother and the Bride’s Mom

Photo: Creative Commons/corydalus

I was invited to a wedding that was going really well until we found out that the bride’s mother was doing the deed with one of the groomsmen. It was at one of those fancy country clubs, and my friend saw two people getting it on as he walked by….

My friend, bless his heart, ended up doing the only thing he thought that he should do. He decided to us to go walk down that hallway and take a peek at the situation. In total, four of us walked down there, and sure enough, we saw the two of them getting busy on a stack of chairs….

We easily recognized him as the groom’s brother. This was also before the ceremony began. As for the mother of the bride, we ended up recognizing her a little later at the reception when we saw the same blue dress she was wearing. Reddit User: decyde

It Should Have Been Me

Photo: Creative Commons/corydalus

I was a wedding butler for 2 years and have worked over 100 weddings, so I have quite a few stories to tell. A wedding butler’s job is to maintain/clean as well as cater to people’s needs, regardless of what they are. The most awkward wedding I ever worked started out like any other wedding….

Everything was going smoothly until it was time for the speeches. The best man goes up to give his speech, and we can tell that he is already hammered. It starts out normal until I hear him end his speech with how it should have been him and that he still loves her.

Obviously after that, everyone went silent, and it got really awkward and uncomfortable. Someone eventually ushered him off stage, and the only reason I didn’t help was because I was doubled over trying not to burst out laughing. Reddit User: Dragpon77

My Aunt’s Shenanigans

Photo: Creative Commons/Jacob & Kiki Hantla

My aunt got so drunk at her own daughter’s (my cousin’s) wedding that she had a hepatitis flare-up. I learned a few things about the condition that day, some of which I could have lived without. The most shocking thing was that it sometimes makes people bleed uncontrollably from different parts of their body….

About 45 minutes before the ceremony, she showed up completely wasted, sobbing uncontrollably, with blood all over her dress. We had to have the ceremony delayed by over two hours so that we could wash the dress and give it time to dry out in the sun. That wasn’t the end of her shenanigans that evening, but it was certainly the most memorable. Reddit User: denialofdeath

The Newlyweds’ Cake

Photo: Flickr/Jared eberhardt

What I witnessed was only horrible for one person: the main hostess for the reception of approximately 30 guests. Instead of using a cart, she carried in the newlyweds’ 3-tier wedding cake. She not only dropped it but then fell face-first into it on the floor. First, there was dead silence, then a few giggles, and finally, her emotional breakdown….

I’ve never seen anything like it before. She was devastated from both the embarrassment and ruining the couple’s special moment. We all assured her that we’re half drunk and don’t care about the cake. The best part was that she collected $1000 more in tips than she would have had the incident not happened. The Pastor, Then the Best Man

Photo: Creative Commons/Open Grid Scheduler / Grid Engine

This happened at my own wedding. The pastor officiating on the big day had a heart attack, and my (now) wife and I caught him as he fell to the floor. We have videos of my wife, in her wedding dress, consoling the pastor’s wife, who was in tears behind the podium….

Luckily, one of my groomsmen was an emergency room doctor, and while doing his thing, the pastor came back around, thankfully. The pastor was a stubborn man, and he insisted on finishing the ceremony, even though the sound of sirens from the ambulance coming for him.

But then something else happened…. My brother, the best man, passed out minutes later. Apparently, he had put on the wrong collared shirt, and it was too tight around the neck. At least the EMTs had something to do while the pastor finished up. Reddit User: KUARCE

No Cell Reception

Photo: Creative Commons/cromely

I was a guest at a friend’s wedding that didn’t start until much later than it was scheduled. We almost thought that there wasn’t going to be a wedding. The bride and groom were more than 2 hours late to their own wedding. It turns out that neither one of them had a license, but they had to have their wedding out in the woods….

They never thought to contact anyone to ask for a ride to their wedding. To make matters worse, they didn’t pay either of their cell phone bills and as a result, they were both unable to make any calls. Not that it mattered anyway, because there was no cell reception where the wedding was held. Reddit User: cspyny

The Bride’s Mother

Photo: Creative Commons/PamelaVWhite

This happened at the wedding of two good friends of mine. The bride was seriously neglected by her mother as a child, but she decided to invite her as an attempt at reconciliation. The ceremony went off without a hitch, and now we’re at the reception part of the evening….

The mother is talking to one of the bridesmaids, and all of a sudden, we hear her say to the bridesmaid, “Well I guess it’s a good thing you can’t have kids, isn’t it?” The bridesmaid bursts into tears. The bride, who heard the conversation, grabs a utensil to threaten to use on her mother, but someone stops her.

The mother ends up being put into the car by her partner, and they disappear off into the night. That was the last we heard or saw of them. I don’t think the bride will be inviting her mom anywhere anytime soon because of that one. Reddit User: CaptainLameO

Gone Forever

Photo: Creative Commons/craig antony spence

I went to this wedding with my boyfriend a few years ago where his friend was marrying a woman that no one liked. During the ceremony, we all noticed that the best man was uncomfortable. As soon as the ceremony ended, the best man burst into tears, and for about 10 minutes, he had to excuse himself; he just realized that his best friend was gone forever….

We tried to cheer him up. We told him that the groom, his friend, would still be close and that the bride wasn’t that bad. Everyone knew that it was a lie, and we were all really depressed. Later, the bride came and yelled at our entire group (her husband’s friends) because we weren’t dancing enough. Reddit User: moonshinetime

Joining Hands

Photo: Creative Commons/JasonUnbound

During a friend’s wedding, the DJ got so drunk that she could not even stand up. She didn’t have the bride’s requested wedding song, so a group of people tried to help out by joining hands and trying to sing the song (it was a random country song) for her, and she just stood in the middle of the circle crying in her dress….

No one knew the lyrics of the song, and it was truly horrible. If that wasn’t bad enough, her father got wasted and started a fight, which ended with him destroying a stop sign with his fists. Let’s not forget that this happened at the same wedding that the party got picked up in a NASCAR stretch limo. Classy, right? Reddit User: treylek

Musical Spouses

Photo: Creative Commons/Mario_T_

My aunt got married for a second time; it was to the guy who lived two houses down from her. The worst part of the wedding was one of the toasts. A neighbor got up and said, “I want everyone to raise their glasses. 15 years ago, we all moved into this neighborhood married to the wrong people; by the end of the summer, we will all be married to the right people!”

I later found out that there were 8 couples that got divorced and remarried in that one neighborhood, or as I call it, they played “musical spouses.” We left the reception very quickly before another neighbor began to speak. Reddit User: Justice_seeker6

Only Three Made It Out

Photo: Flickr/Erica Firment

I was a wedding DJ for about 10 years, and I have seen a lot of bad things. At one of the weddings I was hired for, I was supposed to introduce the wedding party. The bus showed up around 5:00 pm, and out of the 18 people in the wedding party, only 3 of them made it off….

The 3 were the bride, the best man, and one of the bridesmaids. The rest were so drunk that they did not stumble inside until almost four and a half hours later; they missed everything. They could not make any toasts, have the first dance as a married couple, or cut the cake.

Why was that? Well, because the groom was still passed out in the bus. By the time they made it inside, almost everyone had left. The bride was angry about the situation, but can’t say that I even blame her? Her day was just ruined. Reddit User: slerley1979

My 40-Something-Year-Old Cousin

Photo: Creative Commons/TimmyGUNZ

My married 40-something-year-old cousin, who has two kids (12 and 9), got ridiculously drunk at my wedding. Her husband couldn’t come, so it was just her and her children, who weren’t allowed since it was adults only. My dad, my best man, was so embarrassed by her behavior that he left in the middle of the reception to take her to a hotel.

After the reception, we went back to the hotel and found my cousin’s children alone in the hotel room. My 86-year-old grandmother went to the hotel bar and saw her making out with a random guy. She told my cousin it was time to go to bed, and she refused….

Grandma said one more time that it was time to leave, and my cousin gets up, shoves my grandmother to the ground, and then started screaming for security to come to arrest her. She was lucky that she wasn’t the one arrested. Reddit User: hangoverprone

A-List and B-List

Photo: Creative Commons/2thin2swim

It was my then-business partner’s second marriage to a very prominent lawyer. She was in her 40s but behaved like a sorority sister who was obsessed with image and status. When my wife and I showed up, we learned that the guests had been partitioned into an A-list and a B-list….

We were on the shorter A-list who were invited for cocktails, the ceremony and a sit-down dinner. The B-listers were told to come 2.5 hours later for cake and dancing. The B-listers began assembling outside, but they weren’t allowed in. The place had storefront-type windows, and they could see what was going on….

It began to rain, and the B-listers had to stand outside, getting wet. The A-listers were very uncomfortable. The door was finally thrown open, and the angry, damp B-listers straggled in bearing rain-washed gifts. The room was thick with tension, so my wife and I slipped out before the cake-cutting. The Mormon and the Atheist

Photo: Creative Commons/Jacqueline Choo

This happened at my friend’s wedding last year. He and his fiancé had only known each other for approximately 6 months before they tied the knot. She was Mormon and he was an atheist, and we all thought that it was a really strange pairing, but hey, they’re in love. The parents of the bride and groom hated each other, and that’s putting it nicely….

The two moms got into a verbal argument, which then became physical. I don’t know who made the accusation, but one said that they’re only getting married because she’s knocked up. Six months later, she popped out a baby, then tried to pass it off as premature. It turns out that one of the moms was right. Reddit User: wtfapkin

The Unity Candle

Photo: Creative Commons/Cayusa

This was the wedding of a college buddy and his fiancé. My friend met his now-wife through one of those popular dating services. They had a very rocky on and off relationship, so everyone was surprised that they made it down the aisle. Anyway, they ended up getting engaged and were getting married, so we all attended the wedding….

Some of our other college buddies and I made jokes about how long their marriage was going to last. During the ceremony, when they were lighting the unity candle, the wick actually split in two, leaving two separate flames. Like the universe was telling them, “Don’t do it.” However, it’s been over 20 years now, and they are still going strong. Reddit User: kenos99

The New Year’s Eve Wedding

Photo: Creative Commons/Cayusa

I was a banquet chef for approximately 5 years at a fancy Country Club near Vancouver. There were four reception rooms, and sometimes there was more than one wedding on the same day, which could get interesting when the different parties ran into each other. And now for the real story….

On New Year’s Eve, we had two weddings, one upstairs and one downstairs. I was working the upstairs wedding when the father of the bride had a heart attack during the reception and had to be rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, the family found out that the father passed away in the hospital,

They decided to announce it to everyone…. Right as they told everyone, the party downstairs was starting a countdown for New Year’s. So as everyone in the upstairs banquet room was in shock, they heard 100+ downstairs cheering and singing with joy. Reddit User: grobi52

The Inappropriate Speech

Photo: Creative Commons/Ted LaBar

Last year, one of my many female cousins was having her wedding. She wanted to have a traditional ceremony, so they decided to go for the Catholic church with a minister. The day of the wedding arrived, and their minister thought that it was appropriate to talk about a number of highly controversial topics….

To make things more awkward, he began to speak about the X-Men movie right before a segue to the vows. Our entire family had their mouths hanging open the entire time. It was one of the worst ceremonies that I’ve attended, and I’m rethinking having a traditional ceremony. Reddit User: corinneski

The Ceremonial Gift

Photo: Creative Commons/Lolabola

At one of the many weddings I attended, there was a ceremonial “gifting” of ammunition to the married couple from the groom’s family. When it came out, the entire room was sat in silence, stunned at what was happening. It was the most awkward “are we supposed to clap” moment I’ve ever experienced.

But that was not the scary part. Both the bride and groom are extremely heavy drinkers; some would even call them alcoholics, and the groom, in particular, has a reputation for getting very aggressive when he’s drunk. I could not think of a worse couple to give a firearm to….

After the weapon and ammo ended up being put away, the rest of the wedding was perfect. There was great food and drinks all around, stunning location, and tasty cocktails. I was just a little worried when I saw what the gift was. Reddit User: rancidnons

The Trip She Never Took

Photo: Creative Commons/jon_coyne

I went to a friend’s wedding, where they hired a host to get through the entire reception. Before the ceremony, the host went to the bride and groom separately and asked them to write down their best memory of each other. They had been dating for 5 or 6 years, and they were both previously married….

During the ceremony, that “host” took the microphone and started to talk about some things that he had learned about the newly married couple. He then brought out the best memory that each one had written; the bride wrote about their trip to England, while the groom wrote about their trip to Paris…. He went into detail about their midnight kiss at the Eiffel Tower, which he described as being “magical.” We later learned that she had never been to Paris. Reddit user: [redacted]

My Parents’ Wedding

Photo: Creative Commons/blisschan

My parents had a terrible wedding. I wasn’t there to witness it, but I keep hearing the stories all the time. The wedding was in July, so they were expecting a sunny day, but it turned out to be a major downpour. My mother had a taxi scheduled to take her from her hotel to the church, but he was super late….

As she was waiting, in her wedding dress, she gets hit by a car, but it wasn’t hard enough to break any bones, so she just walks it off. It turns out that it was the taxi that was supposed to pick her up. Her dress was ruined, but she finally made it to the church, where she found my dad on the verge of a nervous breakdown thinking that she wasn’t going to show. Reddit User: simplerthings

It Was Too Late

Photo: Creative Commons/felix_cohen

My friend did this to me. Before my wedding, a group of friends and I were all staying at my parents’ vacation home. We decide to go out to a nice steak dinner at a new place where my friend (a groomsman) announced that he didn’t think me and my fiancée should get married. He said it was because we argue with each other on occasion….

My fiancée just put her head down and quietly wept. I had no idea where the comment came from. I took him outside to yell at him for not keeping that opinion between the men. He apologized, but it was too late. The whole table sat in silence, and my fiancée and I couldn’t even eat our food when it came. We’ve been happily married for 3 years now. Reddit User: CRFyou

The Best Speech Ever

Photo: Creative Commons/hodgers

I went to my cousin’s wedding a couple of years ago, and here’s what happened. I didn’t know anybody very well, as I hadn’t seen this cousin in a long time, but his best man was nice enough to come over and say hello. He was really cool, but at the reception, he got ridiculously drunk….

He had enough alcohol to possibly render a small child useless with his breath. So we finally got to the toasts portion of the reception, and the best man was one of the many people who had to give a speech. He staggered to the microphone, pulled out his prepared speech, laughed, then threw it away….

He then leaned into the mic  and started off his speech with a series of choice expletives to a room full of children and their parents. The groom actually loved it. He was tearing up and applauding at the end. It was pretty weird. Reddit User: pimpintuna

The Groom’s Sister

Photo: Creative Commons/kookykrys

I attended a wedding where the groom’s sister was wasted throughout the entire wedding. Just completely obliterated. I found out that she had stashed a brown paper bag with alcohol under her chair for the Lord’s prayer. She held my hand the entire time while repeating, “I need to pee.”

She drank heavily, but she still managed to catch the bouquet. The guy who caught the garter had his head shoved up her dress while he was putting it on her. When he came out from under, he turned bright red and ran away. She chased him around and literally groped him in front of everyone….

She got bored with that and started dancing on the DJ’s table. The bride was mortified, so the woman’s brother (the groom) picked her up and tried to carry her outside. It sent her boyfriend into a rage, and he picked a fight with the brother. The cops had to be called. Reddit User: _Sweater_Puppies_

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Photo: Creative Commons/hummer23

My cousin, a religious Jew, got married a while back, but here’s a wedding story where several things went wrong. She made sure that the DJ didn’t play the traditional wedding march, as it was made by an anti-Semite, but he did. There’s a video of her looking furious as she hears the song begin….

The second thing that went wrong was that the rings didn’t fit. It was so bad that the one of their finger started to change colors due to poor circulation. The third thing was when the officiant got the names of the bride and groom completely wrong.

The fourth thing was when then he stepped back and fell off the stage mid-ceremony…. At the time it was horrifying, and I’m not sure what I would have done if it was me. But my cousin and her husband have been together for almost 25 years now, so it became a funny story to tell. Reddit user: my_Favorite_post

The Poofy White Dress

Photo: Flickr/Martina Hoever

I went to a friend’s wedding, and it was nice. Nothing huge happened, but her 16-year-old cousin showed up in a poofy white dress that had a pink lace shawl around her shoulders. The outfit was finished off with a tiara. The bride could only try to grin through her teeth….

We found out that her aunt and uncle (her cousin’s parents) assisted with paying for most of the wedding. It made me think about my own wedding. I’m going to make sure to have red wine there. My bridesmaids and the groomsmen have agreed to be on “red wine duty”….

If someone would wind up showing up wearing something like that to my wedding, they would definitely get splashed with the red wine. I’m making sure that nobody is going to wear white to my wedding except for the flower girl and me. Reddit User: novaer

The Dessert Portion of Dinner

Photo: Creative Commons/Sean MacEntee

During a friend’s wedding, we were told that the dessert portion of the evening would be at the park at the waterfront downtown. We all followed the bride to the location, and when we got there, we thought that it was a benefit event where desserts and the other food were free….

It took me a while to realize that the bride had sneaked us into this event via the back part of the park. They basically lied to us about the event and sneaked about 20 people into a benefit without paying. I felt terrible about this, and the four of us scraped together all the cash we had and put it in the tip jar at one of the dessert stations. Reddit User: mannequin_hands

You Guys Won’t Last Long

Photo: Creative Commons/gmtbillings

My wedding was a nightmare. My now-husband decided that while we were in Kentucky for Christmas, we should get married. It was 30 below zero degrees, and I’m wearing a short-sleeved white dress. When we get to the courthouse, we find out that it’s “gonna be half-priced” because my husband is the judge’s second cousin….

To top it off, my new father-in-law dropped us off at the door so he could go play poker. He finally picked us up and told us that my husband’s cousin gave us a “weddin’ gif”: three mason jars of moonshine. He then took us to Wendy’s afterward, because he didn’t think our marriage would last long. Reddit User: jumpingbeans12

The Swap

Photo: Creative Commons/sillysadness

I was invited to a cousin’s wedding. He, the groom, was too immature to be getting married, and his groomsmen acted like a bunch of frat boys. An hour before the ceremony, the couple had a small cocktail party just for the families and close friends to get to know each other….

One of the groomsmen thought it would be funny to give him a drink where he swapped the standard tequila or rum with 1/3rd bottle of “Everclear,” which is 95% pure alcohol. 10 minutes before he was supposed to be walking down the aisle, the groom started throwing it up. When the ceremony started, he was almost falling down drunk….

He was swaying the whole time and slurring his words and he couldn’t manage to get through his vows. The bride kept on crying, but the ceremony couldn’t be postponed because there was another wedding scheduled right after theirs. Reddit User: laddercrash

Falling Face-First

Photo: Creative Commons/Guiniveretoo

This happened at my sister’s wedding. My aunt has multiple sclerosis, so she can’t really pick her feet up as she walks. While she was walking past the dance floor, she tripped and fell over face-first onto the wine glass that she was holding. She didn’t realize that she was walking on one of those temporary boards….

It happened right in front of me, and I have never seen so much blood in my life! I couldn’t believe how instant it all just poured out; it was like a manga cartoon. It was one of the most horrific things I’ve ever seen. Reddit User: the ringmaster55

I Found the Groom

Photo: Creative Commons/bluelizardworld

When I was a teen, I worked at a restaurant that had a large room in the back for weddings. There were at least two weddings every weekend. I have seen all kinds of things. While I was still a baby, my parents worked at the same restaurant, and they too have told me some very crazy stories….

The worst one that they’ve told me was when my mother walked into the restroom to find the groom going at it with one of the bridesmaids while he was drunk. Of course, the bride found out and drama ensued; the reception ended extremely early and many tears were shed. I just don’t understand how you could think you wouldn’t get caught. They “Really Loved His Package”

Photo: Creative Commons/ShanMcG213

Here’s my worst/most hilarious wedding story. At the reception, the pastor who wed the couple a few hours before gave a long and completely inappropriate speech. It was about the groom, a UPS driver who would deliver packages to older ladies. He said that the old ladies “really loved his package….”

The guests at the wedding laughed, thinking he was joking, but he just kept going on about how old ladies loved his packages and waited for him to deliver them. He was serious, and he was extremely confused as to why people were laughing. The strange thing is that he kept repeating himself like that would help to somehow clear things up. Reddit User: toad32

Her Friend’s Sister

Photo: Creative Commons/Oh Hush Hailey

My friend was supposed to get married the next day, but during the rehearsal dinner, his ex-girlfriend showed up and started driving by the venue over and over. The bride was so scared that the ex would ruin everything that we conducted a secret ceremony right then and there, just in case….

He texted a photo of the certificate to his ex saying, “It’s too late, we did it.” She texted back that she had no idea what he was talking about. A few years later, after they got divorced, we found out that it wasn’t his ex-girlfriend.  The wife hired her friend’s sister, who had a similar build and hair, to rent the same model of SUV of my friend’s ex and drive by. All because she was afraid he would leave her before the ceremony. Reddit user: [redacted]

The Writing On the Wall

Photo: Creative Commons/britinichu

I’ve been working as a server for a few years now, but this one takes the cake of everything that I’ve seen happen at a wedding. Like most establishments, we have a policy of cutting off drunk people at the bar. However, a woman in her mid-20s seemed fine the entire night of the wedding celebration….

Fast-forward to the end of the party and it’s around 2am. The decorations were all down, the chairs were stacked, and the floor was vacuumed. The last task was to do a quick bathroom check. That’s when we found her. She had thrown up everywhere and worse.

It matters because it was not contained; it was smeared on the wall, all over the toilet, and all over her. The worst (or saddest) part was, we recalled seeing her with her boyfriend that evening. But he had left without her. Reddit user: [redacted]

Borrowing a Suit

Photo: Creative Commons/roystonford

This was at my father’s wedding. My now-stepmom was in a 12-year relationship with a guy when she met my father. But she left him for my dad, and within a few months, they ended up getting married. My dad actually borrowed a suit from her ex to wear on the day, and he even showed up to the wedding….

During the speeches, my stepmother went into graphic detail about how they met and fell in love. If that wasn’t bad enough, she also said that she felt bad because of her partner, so she decided to have “one more night of passion” with my dad before going back to her partner….

Apparently, that night was so good that she had to leave him and run off with my father. This guy looked totally unfazed, and once I got to know my stepmother, I understood why he was actually glad that dad was taking her off his hands. Reddit User: Alect0

The EMTs

Photo: Creative Commons/OBU SPIRES

I went to my little brother’s wedding a few years ago, and he had this one friend who I loathed because he’s a bit of a jerk. At the bachelor party, he raised the group’s tab about $75, so I was already a little annoyed with him. On the day of the wedding, he didn’t even show up for the ceremony.

As the reception starts, I notice that he is not around, and I think, good, maybe he won’t show. About an hour before the end of the reception, he shows up with two friends. They’re all EMTs, and they came to the wedding in their work uniforms. Everyone is wearing suits and dresses, and there are these three idiots dressed in cargo pants and polos with all their EMT belts and gear on….

Being the groom’s older brother, I walked over to this guy and whispered in his ear, “You better finish your food right now, and you and your friends get the hell out of here.” He turned red, wolfed down his food in a hurry, and left. Reddit User: comcamman

My Brother’s Wedding

Photo: creativecommons.org/Sheba_Also 43,000 photos

We may have hired a photographer for nothing for a wedding. My dad was taking pictures at my brother’s wedding. It doesn’t sound that bad, but he was actually getting in the way of the photographer that my brother actually hired for the event. The guy was a professional.

Every picture the photographer tried to take, my dad was right beside him inching him out and pushing him out of the way. My brother and mom were both really angry at him. Of course, dad wasn’t really able to be in any of the pictures, considering he was behind the camera during the whole wedding. Reddit user: [redacted]

She Jumped Into the Lake

Photo: creativecommons.org/Lee J Haywood

Right after the ceremony, we walked over to the reception area, and the sister-in-law starts screeching about what an awful day it is and gashes her husband’s eyebrow open with one of her high heels. People are scrambling to get him napkins because he’s bleeding.

As that’s happening, she then says, “I can’t take this anymore!” and throws herself off of the dock. The problem is, the lake at that point was only four feet deep. Sister-in-law’s father just turns towards the lake and tells her to get her butt out of there. Reddit user: [redacted]

No Guests Watched Them

Photo: creativecommons.org/neal..patel

They had practiced their opening dance, a tango, in a large room over and over again. The wedding venue was a long and narrow, small room. They were trampling all over the guests. Right in the middle of all this, the kitchen started bringing out food (they hadn’t served any food before).

So I have video and photos (I was the photographer) of the couple trampling people, with no guests at all watching them, not even the bride’s mother, who was destroying a pack of fries with her back turned to the couple’s opening dance. Reddit user: [redacted]

 Actually About The Pastor

Photo: creativecommons.org/JSmith Photo

The whole ceremony ended up becoming about the pastor who was officiating the wedding. He also would give this terrible advice. One thing he actually said was, “If you’re having problems, don’t talk to each other, talk to me instead. You have my number.”

After my cousin said “I do,” he made some comment about, “Oh, I thought you were going to do it with more gusto, like when you’re cheering for the Bears.” At the end, “And by the power vested in me by the state of Illinois, which I am now a resident of, I now pronounce you man and wife.” Reddit user: [redacted]

He Caught on Fire

Photo: creativecommons.org/Arundel and Brighton

At some point during the ceremony, something pretty crazy happened. The best man took a step backward on the altar to allow the priest to walk past and he ended up backing right into a candle that was behind him. It was a pretty unfortunate step that he took.

The guy ended up setting his suit jacket, which was light blue because it was the ’90s, on fire. It was quickly put out, luckily, with no injury to him other than a lost deposit on a tux and a charred shirt. Except he spent the rest of the day with a burned jacket on. Reddit user: [redacted]

 A Wedding and A Show

Photo: creativecommons.org/Lee J Haywood i

I’m glad this girl was having a good time at the party, but it may have been at the expense of some of the other wedding guests. At my cousin’s wedding, one of her friends was there and was wearing this extremely short dress, and I mean extremely short.

She got a little tipsy at the open bar and then started grinding up on a few people on the dance floor. Everyone spectating the dance floor got a nice view of mostly older people mingling, kids running around, and her underwear as she was flailing about. Reddit user: [redacted]

People Came Up and Grabbed Cupcakes

Photo: creativecommons.org/B.Mayer

I went to my fiancé’s old friends’ wedding last year. They had a pyramid of cupcakes for all the guests to take and a small cake for the bride and groom, and people started coming up and grabbing cupcakes before the bride and groom got a chance to cut their cake.

My fiancé and her friends also took their cupcakes. They tried to offer me one, but I refused to touch it before the couple cut their cake. Maybe I’m old-fashioned. They knew why, “but everyone else is grabbing one! And we want one before they’re gone!” Reddit user: [redacted]

 The Best Man

Photo: creativecommons.org/russelljsmith

One of our boys was the best man and had to make a speech. And of course, everyone was feeling pretty good by then, after having some drinks. The best man stands up to make his speech, and he himself was drunk. he was swaying all over the place and slurring his words.

He says during his speech, “You can do better than her; we never see you anymore man, and she took you from us.” “You need a girl who’s cool.” Then he got cut off by the bride’s father and was taken to the back to “have a few words.” Reddit user: [redacted]

The Cheating Groom

Photo: creativecommons.org/PamelaVWhite

From the age of 16 to 19, I worked at a restaurant that had a large room in the back for weddings. The worst one I saw has to have been the one where my mom walked into the restroom to find the groom together with one of the bridesmaids, totally wasted.

Of course, the bride found out, and drama ensued. No violence or anything happened, but of course the reception ended early and many tears were shed. I just don’t understand how you could think you wouldn’t get caught. It seems like the groom just didn’t care. Reddit user: [redacted]

Campus Ministry Wedding

Photo: creativecommons.org/nparekhcards

This couple met in a campus ministry organization. Both very immature evangelical Christians. Their wedding ceremony was like a campus ministry meeting, with skits about teenagers’ ideas of marriage (wildly inaccurate and offensive towards married people).

The groom gave a “sermon” about how he proposed. He used cocoa mix in the bathroom to fake like he needed the bathroom and was ill. Then he reached in the toilet to get the ring. This sermon was followed by an altar call for the not born again guests to come forward and be saved. No one came forward. Reddit user: [redacted]

The Newborn Baby

Photo: creativecommons.org/2nd Street Photography

Well, at my wedding, someone brought a newborn baby and put it in my honeymoon suite without telling or asking anyone. Everyone at my wedding was really hammered. I especially got really drunk, and I went to my room to puke in the trash next to the bed.

What I didn’t realize was that it was mere inches away from this newborn baby. I only realized the baby was even there when I rolled onto the bed in the dark and almost ended up smothering it. I was horrified. It was a unique wedding experience. Reddit user: [redacted]

The Father of the Groom Died

Photo: creativecommons.org/mliu92

This is a really sad story. The father of the groom ended up dying the night of the wedding. He didn’t die at the wedding itself, but he started having bad chest pain and eventually got a ride with someone to the emergency room. He died only 30 minutes later.

It sucked because it ruined the wedding reception, and their honeymoon was canceled. The worst part is the wedding pictures. You can see him there smiling and posing with everyone. Little did he or anyone else know that he would be dead within the next few hours. Reddit user: [redacted]

How to Prevent Cold Feet

Photo: creativecommons.org/wordjunky

During the rehearsal of my friend’s wedding, his ex-girlfriend showed up and started driving past the park where it was happening over and over again. The bride was so scared that the ex would ruin everything, so they ended up tying the knot that night.

A few years later, after they’d divorced, we found out that the wife had hired her friend’s sister, who had a similar build and hair, to wear big sunglasses and a hat and show up that day. All because she was afraid he would leave before the ceremony. He should have. Reddit user: [redacted]

 The Paper Lantern

Photo: creativecommons.org/John Rabbit

At my sister’s outdoor wedding, they tried to make a paper lantern. They lit the little candle in the bottom, but it wouldn’t take flight. It wasn’t a huge deal, so they just handed it over to the best man, and he held it while they went on with the ceremony.

A few minutes later, while they were professing their love, the lantern completely caught fire. The best man had to throw it on the ground in the middle of the ceremony and stomp on it. They’re in the middle of a divorce less than four years later. Reddit user: [redacted]

Trampled by Horses

Photo: creativecommons.org/andrew_j_w

This is the story you would hear someone tell if they were explaining why they’re now scared of horses. I work in catering, and one of the worst things I’ve seen is that there were these horses involved in the ceremony. Something happened when one of the grandmothers arrives late to the wedding…

Somehow the grandmother’s arrival provoked the horses when they were in the parking lot. I was unfortunately standing too close and ended up getting trampled by the horses and was sent to the hospital. It was kind of horrible. Reddit user: [redacted]

The Crazy Girlfriend

Photo: creativecommons.org/deansouglass

One of my friends was getting married, and the best man’s girlfriend was just a really annoying person. Most people in our friend’s group didn’t really like her very much, but she was absolutely miffed that she wasn’t asked by the bride to be a bridesmaid.

It was a small ceremony, and the girlfriend showed up to the wedding wearing a dress exactly like the ones the bridesmaids were wearing. When she was told that she still wasn’t allowed to be a bridesmaid, she instituted herself as an usher and spent the entire time smiling like she had won some game. Reddit user: [redacted]

The Groom Sat in Tears

Photo: creativecommons.org/saritarobinson

Here’s a situation where I don’t really understand why they still went through with a reception. What were they celebrating? Infidelity? The bride had apparently been cheating on the groom with the best man, and it came out a few days before the wedding.

They ended up still having the celebration without the wedding ceremony. So, full wedding clothing, hair, make-up, and reception. The bride had a blast, and they did speeches and everything. The groom sat in tears most of the night. Reddit user: [redacted]

Girl Scout

At my wedding almost 5 years ago, one of the girls was getting pretty tipsy on the dance floor. She started lifting up her skirt as she danced as if she was dancing at a club. She started lifting it so high that her underwear was showing, and was visible to everyone.

The girls kept trying to lower her skirt, but she kept raising it. She was a Girl Scout employee no less and was upstaged by another drunk girl that had her dress open up in front of all my relatives when she started jumping to the music. Reddit user: [redacted]
